New Islington Free School in Manchester got in touch with Trigger in need to freshen up their school walls. We were faced with huge, imposing staircase leading up to the first floor of their school. After doing some initial visuals for the school wall art for a different part of the school they thought our expertise could also make this area much more friendly and inviting. The height, length and lighting of the area made this a challenging project.
After discussion with the school we decided a timeline would work very well on one side of the wall. We aimed to focus on history. As a city school, bringing in a little nature was important for the pupils. An animal and plants theme was chosen for the other side of the staircase. We created a design that was both colourful and interesting yet light enough for the enclosed area. Both sides of the staircase have a really cohesive look even though the themes are totally different. We achieved this by creating bespoke illustrations for each of the timeline elements. This illustrative look was echoed on the nature side. A border of grasses and plants and half hidden animals at the bottom of the design create a lovely visual continuity. This design element also helps to disguise the odd scuff mark caused by busy feet. However, if the odd mark does appear, these can be easily wiped off due to the protective laminate.
The smart new graphics looked so impressive once installed. The school actually highlighted that some of the connecting walls needed a little sprucing up. In order to make sure this did not detract from the overall effect we also gave these areas a lick of paint. All part of the service!
